Ask anyone in Dehradun about a weekend away and they’ll tell you it needs three days, a packed car and some luck with the traffic. It really doesn’t. A one night stay in Dehradun beside a river gives you the quiet you were after, and you’re still at your desk on Monday without feeling wrecked.
We put this page together because the same questions keep reaching our phone: how far is it, what do we do when we get there, is it fine with kids, when should we come? So here are the answers in one place. We’re Riverwoods Resort, at Malsi near Robber’s Cave, and we’ve been taking guests since 2020. If you’re still weighing up a resort in Dehradun for the weekend, read on and see if it fits.
Why a One Night Stay in Dehradun Is Often Enough
Long trips come with baggage. Leave applications, hotel hopping, and a list of places you feel you should see on day two, even though everyone’s tired by then. One night skips nearly all of it. You get there by early afternoon, spend the evening outside, sleep properly, eat breakfast without watching the clock and head home.
Who’s it for? Couples who’ve been buried in work. Families with school-going kids who can only spare a weekend. Friends coming up from Delhi, Haridwar or Rishikesh who want a stop somewhere green rather than a full holiday. And locals, because staying a night in your own city is oddly rare.
When you’d want a second night
If Mussoorie is on your list, add another night. Trying to fit the hills and the river into one night just means you spend most of it in the car.
How to Pick a Resort in Dehradun Without Overthinking It
Every resort in Dehradun looks good in photographs, which isn’t much help. Here’s what we’d actually check.
Check the travel time first
A long transfer eats a big chunk of one night. We’re at Malsi, close to Robber’s Cave (Guchhu Pani), roughly 10 to 15 minutes from the city centre. Dehradun Railway Station is about 10 to 15 km away and Jolly Grant Airport about 25 to 30 km. Coming off a late train or flight? We run a pick-up and drop service from both.
Make sure the nature is actually there
Plenty of places put “nature” in the name and then give you a view of the car park. Here the river runs alongside the property, forest surrounds it and the lower Himalayas sit behind. Don’t take our word for it. The gallery has photos and videos, so you can judge for yourself.
Rooms, food and the small stuff
We have six deluxe river-view rooms, which keeps things calm on an ordinary night. Breakfast is included, there’s a restaurant on site, the Wi-Fi is fast and you can park your own car. One thing worth asking any place you shortlist, us included: is a big event booked on your dates? Our lawn does host parties, and if silence is the whole point of your trip, you’d rather know before you pay.

How a One-Day Family Outing in Dehradun Can Play Out
This is roughly how we’d spend an overnight resort stay with kids. Treat it as a sketch, not a timetable. Children and grandparents never stick to one anyway.
Lunchtime: arrive and settle in
Try to reach us around lunch. Ask about check-in and check-out times when you book, since they can shift with the room and the day. Drop the bags, wash your face, eat. The kids can head to the playground (there’s an indoor one and an outdoor one) while the adults finish their tea.
Mid-afternoon: Robber’s Cave
Guchhu Pani, which most people call Robber’s Cave, is a short way off. A stream flows through a narrow cave and you wade through it, so wear shoes that can get wet and keep hold of small hands. If it rained heavily the night before, skip it, because the water can rise fast. Malsi Deer Park is nearby too and is easier going for very small children. Try to be back before the light goes.
Evening: the bonfire
Evenings are for the bonfire on the riverbank, and dinner can be served near the water too. Phones usually go quiet without anyone asking.
Next morning
Breakfast is part of the stay, so nobody’s counting minutes. Walk along the bank for a while, or do a yoga session if you asked for one beforehand, then check out when you’re ready. If there’s energy left on the way home, Sahastradhara and the Mussoorie road are both easy detours.
Nature Stay in Dehradun: What You Can Do Without Leaving the Property
The nicest part of a nature stay in Dehradun is that you don’t need an itinerary. Take as many of these as you like, or none.
- Walk along the river. There’s a small trek on the bank, nothing hard.
- Early mornings are the time for bird-watching in the forest around Malsi.
- Fishing by the river, if somebody in your group has the patience for it.
- Yoga, on request. Tell us before you arrive.
- The kids get indoor and outdoor play areas, which buys the adults an hour or two.
- Spa treatments. Ask when you book.
Mornings are worth setting an alarm for. The forest around Malsi is at its quietest early on, and the riverbank is cool and still. Take your tea out there instead of drinking it in the room. Or just sit by the water and do nothing at all.
What to Eat During Your Overnight Resort Stay
Food matters more on a short trip than people admit. Our restaurant serves Garhwali dishes and continental food, along with organic farm-to-table meals, and we try to use local ingredients where we can. Never had Garhwali food? Ask the staff what’s on that day and pick something you can’t pronounce.
If you’d rather eat somewhere quieter, there’s riverside dining, and couples can ask for the romantic candle-light setup. Mention allergies or dietary needs when you book. It’s much easier than explaining them at the table.
When to Go for a One Night Stay in Dehradun
We’re open all year, though each season feels different. October and November are green after the rains, with cool air, so walks are pleasant. December and January get cold in the evenings, and that’s when the bonfire earns its keep. From February to May it’s warm and sunny, good for treks and long afternoons on the lawn. The monsoon is the awkward one: the river runs high and Robber’s Cave isn’t safe, so if you do come then, keep your plans loose.
Weekends and long weekends go first. Book early, or try a weekday if your schedule allows. It’s usually quieter. Whatever the season, try to arrive before sunset so you see the river in daylight, and keep a phone with some charge left for the walk back from the bonfire.
Before You Pack the Car
- Shoes that can get wet, plus a normal pair.
- A light jacket. It’s cooler by the river than in the city, even when the weather is warm.
- Mosquito repellent and sunscreen.
- Photo ID for every adult.
- Our number saved in your phone, in case the last stretch of road confuses your map app.
- A book or a pack of cards for the evening.
Booking is simple. Call +91 9105999989 or +91 7060573005, message us on WhatsApp, or use the Contact Us page. Ask which room has the best river view, what the rate covers, whether any event is on your dates and how pick-up will work. There’s also a Perfect Holiday offer starting from ₹5,999, meant for time with someone you love. Check what it includes for your dates before you count on it.
More Than a Quiet Night: Couples, Celebrations and Groups
An overnight resort stay can stretch into other things. If it’s a birthday or an anniversary, our large party space is a riverside lawn with mountain views that takes up to 250 guests. Kitty parties have their own space. Tell us early if your quiet night is turning into an event, and we’ll sort out the practical side.
And if you’re only planning a one-day family outing in Dehradun, fair warning: the river makes it hard to leave, and staying over is easier than the drive home.
